The History of Mums
Mums and garters are usually worn to school the Friday of a Texas high school’s homecoming football game and to the Homecoming game as well.
Where did mums get their start? The specifics aren't clear but we know that mums popped onto the Texas scene in the 1930's when Baylor University held the first Homecoming celebration in the state. At the time, mums were made with real Chrysanthemum flowers adorned by colorful ribbons in the schools colors. Today, mums come in all shapes and sizes, with artificial chrysanthemum flowers to prolong the life of the mum. The tradition never changes, but the size of the mum has transformed over time. As the saying goes, “everything’s bigger in Texas”!
